Advancing Low-methane Sheep And Goat Production In India

The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and its partners are collaborating with herding communities in India to incorporate methane-reduction traits into sheep and goat breeding programs. This collaborative effort aims to support more productive, efficient, and environmentally friendly livestock production in the region. By integrating these traits, the project seeks to improve the overall health and productivity of sheep and goats, ultimately leading to increased milk and meat yields, as well as enhanced livelihoods for herding communities. The initiative also has the potential to contribute to reducing India's greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, as methane is a potent greenhouse gas with significant environmental implications. Through this project, ICARDA and its partners are promoting sustainable agriculture practices and supporting the development of more resilient and environmentally friendly livestock production systems in India.
